A soil-based potting mix made from composted manure, topsoil and sand is a relatively heavy but well-draining medium that's ideal for most container plants. The inclusion of composted manure supplies beneficial organisms and nutrients to the mix while sand ensures proper drainage. Sterilizing the topsoil destroys harmful pathogens, insects and/or weed seeds. After the potting mix is prepared, it can be stored loosely covered in a dry place.
Things You'll Need
Baking tray
Oven
Timer or clock
Potholders or oven mitts
Spoon

Spread topsoil evenly on a baking tray. Heat the topsoil in an oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes, stirring the topsoil with a spoon every five minutes.
Remove the topsoil from the oven, and allow it to cool.
Mix equal portions of the sterilized topsoil, composted manure and sand in a container. Combine the ingredients thoroughly with a spoon.
