It is possible to get that checkerboard pattern you see at ball parks on your own lawn. But you can't just checkerboard cut a lawn with a lawn mower alone. You have to get a weighted lawn roller and roll it in a certain pattern while you're cutting. Follow these steps for the perfect checkerboard pattern lawn that will leave all your neighbors in awe.
Things You'll Need
Riding lawn mower
Weighted lawn roller
Obtain a weighted lawn roller. You can buy or rent these at hardware or garden stores or buy one on the Internet.
Attach the lawn roller to your riding lawn mower.
Mow the lawn back and forth in parallel rows. The first row should go in one direction, say west to east, then the second row should go in the opposite direction, east to west. Repeat this pattern across the entire lawn.
Cut the lawn again in rows perpendicular, at a 90 degree angle, to the first rows. Each row should go in the opposite direction of the previous row; north to south then south to north, repeating this pattern throughout the lawn.
Tips & Warnings
The checkerboard pattern will be more visible if you water it right after cutting. The pattern will also show up better on rye grass, fescue or bluegrass.
