Hanging Grow Bags filled with flowing masses of flowers add a stunning display of color and fragrance to any patio or garden. You've probably seen them at the greenhouse and maybe even cringed at the price for these little beauties. There is no need to pay high prices for these hanging grow bags when you can create them yourself in mere minutes.
Things You'll Need
8X14 inch piece of plywood
1 garbage bag
Staple gun
5 inches rope
Scissors
Lightweight potting mixture
2 flats of plants or flower seeds
Unfold a large heavy duty garbage. Fold into a 16 inch by 20 inch rectangle. You you will have multiple layers of the bag. You may find it more convenient to cut the bag into rectangles, layer them, and staple loosely to hold in place.
Align the top of the garbage bag rectangle with the top of the piece of wood. You will leave this end open for watering or to add additional plants if you wish.
Wrap a 2-inch section of the 20-inch side to the back of the piece of plywood. Staple in place with a staple gun.
Fold a two inch section on the opposing edge of the garbage bag to the back of the opposite side of the plywood and staple in place. You should now have your bag attached at the sides.
Fold the bottom two inches to the backside of the plywood and staple securely. Leave the top open.
Attach a five inch loop of rope to the back of the planter by stapling in place. Be sure to center this loop as it will serve as the hanger for the planter.
Fill the bag with a lightweight potting mixture through the opening in the top of the bag. Your bag should be plump and rounded. Be careful not to overfill the bag by packing the soil tightly. You will need room for your seedlings to be inserted.
Lay the planter down on a flat surface and cut 2-inch Xs at intervals of 4 inches. These are the holes for your seedlings.
Remove your seedlings from the flat or peat pot you purchased them in and gently insert the root ball into one of the holes. Use your fingers to work the potting mixture around the roots and pack firmly. You can purchase a flat of six seedlings at the nursery. For this project you will need two flats of six.
Leave the grow bag and the newly panted seedlings lying down for one to two weeks to get established. Once you see active growth in the seedlings, lift the bag and hang against a solid surface.
Tips & Warnings
You can plant seeds right in the holes in the planter and allow to lie flat until the seeds have germinated and plants are two inches high.
Choose plants that have short compact growth; such as, petunias, impatiens, or pansies.
