Building a portable garden planter will allow you to grow your fruits and vegetables on your porch or deck in your apartment or condo. Because they are portable, you can move them to a more sunny location or pull them into the shade on a hot day. Make a large planter for several vegetables or make a small planter for a tomato plant to grow. Your planter helps liven up your place and gives you an easy way to grow a garden.
Things You'll Need
Tape measure
Pressure treated or cedar wood
Circular saw
Water resistant wood glue
Hot-dipped galvanized screws
Drill
Clamps
Exterior stain or sealer
Measure and Cut
Determine the size of the box you want to make using a tape measure, taking into account the space where your box will go. Make sure to include all dimensions of the box in your calculations: top, bottom and sides.
Add all your measurements together to determine the amount of wood to buy, making sure to buy some extra wood to allow for cutting mistakes.
Cut five square pieces of wood if you are making a square portable garden planter. Cut longer sides and bottom (three pieces) if you are making a rectangular portable garden planter.
Cut additional pieces of wood if you want to make your portable garden planter fancier. Embellish your portable garden planter with a hinged top or outside corner pieces for support and to hide the seams.
Put It Together
Put wood glue on one side of two pieces of wood. Place the two sides together. Use the hot-dipped galvanized screws to screw the pieces together. Repeat with two more pieces of wood and then glue the two together to make the box. Screw the box together.
Take the remaining wood piece and glue it to the bottom of the portable garden planter box. Use the hot-dipped galvanized screws to screw the bottom onto the portable garden planter box. Place the wood clamps on the box and let the glue dry.
Embellish your planter box by adding a hinged top. Cut another piece of wood and screw a hinge onto it and the portable planter box. Place long narrow wood pieces on the corners over the seams.
Use a large paint brush to lightly brush on a layer of stain and sealant. If you purchase your stain and sealant separately, allow time for the stain to dry before you seal.
Plant your vegetables or flowers into the portable garden planter.
Tips & Warnings
If you are making the box for a specific plastic planter, measure around the plastic planter and then add four inches to accommodate moving the plastic planter in and out of the portable garden planter.
