Especially at the beginning of grass cutting season, when the lawn mower hasn't been used for several months, it is important to do a minor tune-up. The first step is to locate and remove the air cleaner element. It is usually a block of foam rubber that you can clean by brushing off the surface with a rag, and then squeeze it several times while it is immersed in a very soapy solution of detergent and water. Rinse it thoroughly and squeeze it almost dry, then dry it off more by squeezing it inside of a wad of dry rags or paper towels. Finally, pour about 1/8 cup of motor oil onto the sponge and squeeze it gently to disperse the oil throughout the filter. Clean the housing with a rag, and reinstall the filter on the mower.
The spark plug should be replaced at least once a year, preferably at the beginning of the mowing season. Remove the spark plug with an adjustable wrench or with a deep well socket and ratchet. Take the plug to an auto parts or hardware store and purchase a matching plug; at the same time also purchase a can of starting fluid. This contains "ether" and is available in an aerosol can for less than two dollars. The plug costs less than three dollars.
Check the engine oil level and add HD30 motor oil if needed. Fill the gasoline tank. Spray a one second burst of starting fluid into the spark plug hole and reinstall the spark plug. Start the lawn mower immediately. It should start up and run normally!
