How to Plant a Palm Tree From Seed

If you're thinking about how nice palm trees would look in your garden, you'll have to decide if you want to plant seeds, seedlings or established plants. If you choose to plant palm tree seeds, you'll need to know the basic facts. It's not difficult, so give it a try.

Research what varieties of palm trees grow best in your area. A simple call or visit to your local nursery will get you the facts you need.

Purchase seeds from a reputable dealer. Ask friends and family, and your local nursery, for recommendations. Do your own research online.

Check the seeds when they arrive. Seeds that are very green are usually immature. Perform seed checks in either of two ways. Pinch the seeds firmly with your thumb and forefinger. If they easily collapse, they are immature or old seeds. Discard these seeds. Or, float seeds in water. Viable seeds sink; bad seeds float.

Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before planting.

Plant the seeds in pots so that they won't be exposed to harmful bugs. Fill a pot three-quarters full of potting soil, put the seed in the pot, then cover to the top with more potting soil. Seeds grow best in an environment of 60 to 70 percent humidity and temperatures of 80 to 85 F, but not in direct sunlight. Keep well-watered, but not saturated.

Growth times depend on the species of palm tree you plant. Some take six to 12 months before you can transplant them to an outdoor garden area.
