Liquid grass seed is applied with water, typically via an applicator chamber that is attached to the end of your hose. Depending on the specific product and the manufacturer, liquid grass seed may contain only seed or it may be mixed with various supplements, such as fertilizer and mulch. It’s available from a variety of merchants. It may also have soil conditioners and additives that will make it stay in place.
Choose the Right Seed
Not all liquid grass seed is created equal. Before you buy, give some thought to what kind of grass you need. Take the following factors into account:
Consider Your Climate
Cool season grasses are appropriate for climates with cold winters and where the summers don’t get overly hot for any length of time. Seed for cool season grass may be a single variety or a mixture of several different types. This type of grass requires plenty of water during the summer to stay green. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is one type of cool season grass that is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 4 through 7.
Warm season grasses do well in the heat of summer, but when the weather turns cold these types will quickly go dormant. Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), hardy in USDA zones 7 through 10, is an example of a warm season grass. Bermuda grass is also good in areas where the conditions tend to be dry.
Consider Your Lifestyle
Some types of grass are relatively low maintenance and don’t need as much of your time as other types might. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time working on your lawn, get a low-maintenance lawn. Tall fescue is a good choice if you’re looking for grass that doesn’t require a lot of work to keep it looking good.
Not all grass can stand up to a lot of traffic. If your yard is going to see a lot of foot traffic and play activity, choose a type of grass that can withstand heavy use. One of the Bermuda grass cultivars is tough enough to stand up to heavy use.
Buying Liquid Grass Seed
Once you’ve decided what kind of grass seed you want to buy, it’s time to find a place to buy it. Liquid grass seed is available from various stores as well as from many online merchants, but you may have to check more than one place before you find the seed you want. Locally, try garden centers, nurseries, home centers, such as Home Depot, and large department stores. Online, liquid grass seed is available through Amazon, eBay and the As Seen on TV store, as well as the online versions of various home centers and nurseries.
