Cockroaches are a common pest problem both inside and outside residential homes. Not only are the insects disgusting, but cockroaches also carry and transmit a number of diseases. While there are many commercial baits and poisons available to kill cockroaches, you can make you own killer cockroach bait at home. The recipe includes food items that attract the roaches as well as ingredients that kill them once the bait is consumed.
Things You'll Need
Bucket
Shortening
White granulated sugar
Paint stirrer or spoon
Bacon drippings (optional)
Powdered boric acid
Flour
Onion
Water
Disposable gloves
Place 1/4 cup of shortening into a bucket and add 1/8 cup of white granulated sugar to it. Mix the two ingredients up with a paint stirrer or a disposable spoon until well combined. If desired, you may substitute bacon drippings for the shortening.
Add 8 oz. of powdered boric acid to another bucket and then add 1/2 cup of flour and half of an onion that is chopped. Stir this mixture well.
Add the contents of the second bucket to the first bucket and mix well until combined. Add 1/4 cup of water and mix until the water is absorbed. Continue adding 1/4 cup of water and stirring until the mixture is the consistency of cookie dough.
Put on disposable rubber gloves and create 1/2- to 1-inch diameter balls of the mixture. Set the balls in areas where roach activity is observed, such as under sinks and cabinets or in garages and outdoor areas.
Tips & Warnings
Boric acid is toxic, so do not reuse any of the mixing tools for other purposes.
Keep the mixture and the resulting balls away from pests and small children.
