Springtime brings the garden into growth. Sometimes it's too much growth! To keep those hedges from growing wild and shaggy, you will want to trim them back. So how do you find the best hedge trimmers at the best price to do the job? Here are some ratings for some of the best hedge trimmers currently on the market.
Decide what hedge cutters are what you need. Consumer Reports came to three major conclusions from testing 18 models of hedge cutters.
Bigger does not necessarily mean better.
Cordless hedge trimmers have difficulty cutting in general.
And even the corded models are noisy.
That said, here are some of the best rated hedge trimmers for the best prices.
Go for a smaller model if you don't need a lot of power. The Black & Decker NHT518 which costs around $100 is a battery operated cordless hedge trimmer that Consumer Reports recommended as being lightweight and quieter than most. Stay away from tough or big branches with this trimmer. Popular Mechanics Magazine also liked it, but faulted it on a battery life of only 15 minutes.
Pay a little more for power if you need it. Consumer Search gave a good review to the Echo HC-160 gas hedge trimmer. This one comes in at approximately $350. All the gas trimmers were more powerful than the electric hedge trimmers, but this one rated highly powerful even for a gas trimmer. It handles stems and branches up to 3/4 of an inch thick and offers anti-vibration handles. Like all gas trimmers, it is heavy, creates exhaust and is noisy.
Check with the experts. The Post Gazette put out an article that was written by the editors of Consumer Reports. They liked the Stihl HomeScaper Series HS 45 for its bigger engine and a long, 24-inch blade. It costs an estimated $290 and weighs 11 pounds.
If you have a limited budget, go with what the customer reviews rate highly rather than the reviews of the experts. Amazon.com came up with good ratings for the Craftsman 79957 electric corded hedge trimmer. At around $70 this is a very economical trimmer that is useful for light use. Weighing in at 7.6 pounds is can be easily used by gardeners who may not be all that strong, and it has a lock on main switch that will prevent trigger fatigue. This one is ideal for small jobs, though care must be taken to keep the cord out of cutting range.
