Things You'll Need
Sharp pruning shears
Large clean planter 3gal or larger
Clean healthy soil
? "- 1" diameter Willow Tree branch
To start a tree from a cutting, select a healthy branch that is approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch in diameter, and about 8-24 inches long. Push the clean cut branch into moist soil about 8 inches leaving two or three leaf nodes exposed above ground. The site should receive at least a small amount of shade during the day to allow the roots to develop properly. If you have no shade create it by setting up a shade screen with cardboard and stakes . Shading from late afternoon sun is best. Roots will start to form within a few days and in a few weeks ( if pot started) they will be ready to be transplanted to a permanent site, ideally as far away as possible from foundations, water pipes and sewer lines.
To root a cutting in pots indoors during winter simply stick the branch in a small pot of moist soil and then transplant come early spring.
To transplant dig a hole in the yard large enough to take all of the soil in the pot then gently place the Willow in the hole. Cover with ground soil and then gently step all the soil in firmly around your new tree. Water regularly until you are satisfied it has set it's roots down.
