In the yard or garden, it's a different story. Mushrooms are almost never wanted, as they tend to grow quickly and often out of hand. If mushrooms are getting on your nerves, there are ways you can get rid of them. You can do it completely naturally, too, so you can protect the plants you do want.

Cut your grass regularly and dispose of leaves and clippings. Mushrooms grow faster when there is more consumable material in your yard, which is basically all the organic compost material that may be lying around.
Water your grass sparingly and early in the morning, so the water will get deep into the roots of your grass. Mushrooms like moisture, so by giving as much to your grass as possible and not overwatering, you are limiting their reproduction.
Use proper chemical-free fertilizers. Make sure to balance out the nitrogen levels in your soil, because too much nitrogen helps mushrooms grow.
Spread around some cornmeal where mushrooms have been. It is a natural fungicide that will help prevent mushroom spores from growing.
Pick mushrooms regularly before they get too big. They only release more spores into the air to spread when they are a certain size, so getting them while they are small prevents spreading.
