Laying sod in your lawn is a fast way to establish grass. This method is perfect for muddy areas where you need an instant lawn. Installation is not too hard and you will be saving money by doing it yourself. Following the proper steps will achieve a professional looking lawn; no one will ever know a landscaper didn't do it.
Things You'll Need
Pickup
Topsoil
Rake
Garden hose
Tiller
Fertilizer
Lawn roller
Prepare the soil before laying the sod. Remove any old grass by tilling the area and removing the old grass clumps.
Lay topsoil over your lawn. To get enough topsoil, you will need to use a pickup to load it in. Even and level out the topsoil by using your rake. Go over it with a roller to compress the dirt.
Lay lawn fertilizer over the topsoil.
Lay your sod. Start on the right and left edges and work your way to the center. Starting this way ensures a full piece of sod is laid on the edges. Edges tend to dry out more quickly, so it's better to use cut-up pieces of sod in the center. Stagger the seams of the sod as if laying bricks. This ensures an even and seamless lawn. Make sure to butt the seams together tightly but not overlapping.
Roll over the lawn to press the sod into contact with the dirt and remove the air bubbles. Once done, water every day for two weeks to establish your new lawn.
