Palm trees are a well known and widely cultivated tree. The palms are from the Arecaceae plant family and can grow up to 230 feet tall, depending upon the species. Most palm trees exist in tropical regions, although they do grow around the world. There are 2,600 species of palm trees in 202 known generas. Some grow quite well in pots, while others grow best out in the open. If you are growing your own palm trees there is a way to make them grow faster, thus producing more quality fruit.
Things You'll Need
Artificial lights
Artificial heat
Mycorhyzal fungi
Palm fertilizer
Potassium
Create a micro-environment for your palm trees to enhance faster growth. The tree's fruiting and flowering are controlled by the amount of light available. If your trees are outdoors make sure they get plenty of light. Indoor palms need artificial lighting.
Place the trees in a warm location. Palm trees grow faster in warm weather. Although they will withstand the cold, they will not grow as quickly. Some of the artificial lighting systems create warmth. If your trees are inside or on the patio, set up artificial heat using heat lamps.
Increase the rate of growth for your palm trees by providing extra nutrients and carbon dioxide. Apply mycorhyzal fungi to the root system to increase the roots ability to intake essential water and nutrients. Look for this product at your local nursery.
Blend into the soil around the palm trees a specialized palm fertilizer, available at most garden supply stores. Potassium sulphate in the soil speeds up the growing process and increases fruit production.
Tips & Warnings
The above methods work for the majority of palms. However, determine the exact type of palm trees you are growing to make sure you follow proper growing instructions.
Do not grow your palms in full shade. They need sunshine to thrive.
