The nice thing about a large yard is that there are plenty of landscaping options. Large yards provide room for rocks, trees, shrubs and lots of flowers. If you have a large front yard and you are designing your own landscape, there are plenty of foliage options and landscape decorations to choose from. Some yards already come with fancy pavement--brick ribbon or river rock. If your landscape design includes extra walkways or patios, just include them in your layout.
Things You'll Need
Border definition
Yard covers (grass/rock gardens)
Trees
Bushes
Shrubs
Flowers
Create a border definition for your large front yard. Determine whether you want a fence, a rock wall or a tall hedge. In addition to tall trees scattered over the yard, you can also add them to the border. Ideal choices are elephant ear.
Decide whether you want a green lush lawn or a desert look with scattered rock gardens. With a proper amount of walkways, large rocks, trees and brick borders, there are plenty of alternatives to grass.
Choose the types of trees for your landscape design. A large yard can house many types of trees. Some good choices are weeping willows and Japanese maples. Place the trees scattered throughout the yard.
Arrange a variety of shrubs and bushes near the trees, closer to the perimeter. They also look good along walkways. Shrubs come in all different shapes, sizes and even colors. Ferns, boxwood, forsythia, hibiscus, and hydrangeas are some of the more popular choices.
Don't forget plenty of flower varieties. Choose the color of your yard and then plant the flowers accordingly. If you want to attract attention to your yard, plant flowers in colors of oranges, reds and yellows. Blues and purples create moods of relaxation and meditation. Plant the flowers around rock gardens, along walkways, and in between shrubs.
Tips & Warnings
When designing your landscape creation, make sure to write down every option and possibility. When you go back to fine-tune your design, you'll see on paper what your choices are.
Purchase a home design program and create your front yard landscape on your computer.
