Landscaping rocks lend a touch of earthy charm to a yard or garden. The rocks are unique in size and shape, adding visual appeal to the plants and flowers that grow around them. Things You'll Need
Acrylic paints in various colors
Paint brushes
Spray clear sealant (choose matte or glossy finish)
Scrub brush with stiff bristles
Laundry detergent
Bucket
Add 1/4 cup of laundry detergent to a bucket, and fill it with water. Swish the water around until the soap has fully dissolved. If you are using powdered laundry detergent, using warm water will help the soap dissolve quicker.
Carry the bucket outside, and place near the landscaping rocks.
Use the stiff-bristled scrub brush to scrub the landscaping rocks that you want to paint. Be sure to scrub well, because you want to get dirt out of every nook and cranny. Dirt left on the landscaping rocks may prevent the paint from adhering properly, which may affect the longevity of your paint job.
Leave the landscaping rocks to dry in the sun. The rocks need to be completely dried before you apply paint, so you should wait several hours. For best results, scrub your rocks at night or early in the morning, and allow them to dry throughout the early afternoon.
Paint the landscaping rocks in the colors and patterns you want to have in your garden. Let your imagination be your guide. You might want bright, vibrant colors that mimic the colors of flowers in your garden. Alternately, you may want to paint the landscaping rocks peaceful, earthy colors with simple words painted on them, such as "Peace" or "Dream."
Allow the paint to dry completely. If you live in a dry climate, this might be a few hours. If you live in a humid climate, you might have to leave the landscaping rocks to dry overnight.
Spray clear sealant on the rocks, making sure to coat every painted surface. This sealant will protect your artwork from the environment. Apply several coats, allowing the paint to dry between coats.
