Wheatgrass juice is often called "liquid sunshine" -- and for good reason. Packed with vitamins, it is known to have healing properties, including the ability to purify blood. Many people like to grow their own wheatgrass at home, so it is fresh for the juicer. If you are growing wheatgrass at home, but it is not growing very fast, follow the tips below to make your wheatgrass grow faster.
Things You'll Need
Organic potting soil
Organic wheatgrass seeds
Organic fertilizer
Spray bottle
Plastic gardening tray
Pre-sprout, or germinate, your seeds. The most common problem with a bad crop is that the seeds were not pre-sprouted. Before planting your seeds, place them in a bowl, rinse them in cool, clean water, then soak them completely covered in cool water for eight hours. Rinse them off, then soak them again for another eight hours. Do it again for a third time. After the third set of eight hours, your seeds should have sprouted tiny roots. This time, when you plant them, they will grow a lot faster.
Check the sunlight. Wheatgrass does not do well in hot, direct sunlight. It prefers indirect sunlight. If you move your wheatgrass to a north- or south-facing window, it will grow a lot faster.
Check the ventilation. Wheatgrass likes to feel the breeze. Make sure it is near an open window or place a fan near the grass. This will help it grow more quickly.
Keep it moist. Use a water bottle to spray your wheatgrass. Make sure the soil is always moist. If it dries out, the sprouts will turn brown and die very quickly. Proper watering will speed the growth of your wheatgrass. Try putting damp newspaper over the shoots when they are an inch high as well.
Harvest it at the right time. It should take about nine days for wheatgrass to grow six inches. Then, cut it off just above the seeds. This will encourage the seeds to grow again. If you wait too long, growth will slow. Harvest at six inches and your wheatgrass will grow quickly again.
Tips & Warnings
Mold may form on the soil. Just ignore it as it won't harm the wheatgrass.
