Sprinkler pumps are vital for the proper working order of several sprinklers linked together. Pumps boost the pressure in a water line to make many sprinklers work off of one feed. When these pumps no longer work correctly, water flow is severely limited and may not reach the entire area that you need to water. Before you bring in a professional, make sure that you have exhausted all of your troubleshooting options.
Things You'll Need
Pipe wrench
Voltage checker
Phillips-head screwdriver
Flat blade screwdriver
Rubber gasket
Teflon sealing paste
Use you pipe wrench and remove the hose fittings on either side. Turn them in a counterclockwise motion to do this.
Clean the filters. Directly inside each end of the hose fittings there will likely be a little screen filter. These just pull out and can be cleaned. Run some clean water through the filters until the grime and residue is gone. This will likely clear up your entire problem.
Check the power to the sprinkler pump. If the screens are clear, check to see if the pump motor is running. If it is not running, use your voltage checker to check the plug socket where it is plugged in. If there is power at the socket but the motor is not running, the motor is burned out and needs to be replaced.
Repair any leaks. If the motor is running but there is still no pressure to the sprinklers, there is a leak. It doesn’t even have to be a water leak; it can be an air leak that bleeds off the pressure and won’t allow the unit to function properly. Using your screwdriver, remove the screws holding the pump together. Where it comes apart will be the main seal, and there should be a rubber gasket. Check the gasket for any rips or tears. If you find any, go to your nearest hardware store and get the correct gasket for this seal. Take the broken gasket with you to make sure you get the correct part.
Secure the gasket area with Teflon paste. Coat the gasket with a heavy coating of Teflon paste. Join the two halves and screw them together. This should solve all air or water leaking problems.
