Things You'll Need
Glass vases (specialty vases are made for this growing method)
Pebbles
Quality bulbs
Glass jars or shallow containers
Choose plump bulbs that have had a dormant period for resting. Growing flower bulbs in water during the winter that have already bloomed weakens the bulb. The results can be disappointing, with little to no blooms. It is recommended that bulbs have a chilling period before allowing them to grow for winter blooming. Dutch Gardens, listed in the resources section, offers chill time information.
If using a specialty vase, fill the vase with water up to the narrow neck. Place the bulb in the neck, root side down. Make sure the only parts of the bulb touching the water are the roots, if they are long enough. If there are no roots showing, place the bulb as close to the water as possible without it being in the water. A wet bulb can easily rot.
Grow flower bulbs in water in the winter with shallow containers or glass jars. Start by filling the container with pebbles. Insert the bulbs into the pebbles about a quarter of an inch down. Fill the container with water just up to the roots of the bulbs.
Place the specialty vase or other containers in a cool, dark place for four to six weeks. The temperature should be a little under 50 degrees. Watch for root development and shoots to start forming.
Move the containers into a warm area with indirect sunlight when leaves have started to sprout, about four to six weeks. As the plant grows, keep moving it into warmer, brighter areas until it is in the desired location.
