St. Augustinegrass can suffer with weeds during the hot summer months since it is not possible to spray with weed killer once the temperatures get into the 80s. This grass should be sprayed in the winter months to kill existing weeds and provide a pre-emergent protection. Unfortunately, you still get weeds in the summer and the only available method is to pull the weeds.
Things You'll Need
Roundup or other weedkiller
Small paint brush
Avoid spraying weed killer on any weeds in St. Augustinegrass. The over-spray will kill large patches of the grass.
Pour some weed killer (such as Roundup) in a cap. Use an artist's brush to carefully paint one or two of the weed's leaves. The weed killer will be drawn down through the entire weed and it will die within a few days. A particularly tenacious weed known in Florida as Gatorweed grows in the summer months and has long, thick roots that snap off if you pull the weed by hand.
Be careful not to drip any weed killer on the St. Augustine grass as it will kill an entire patch of grass.
