All lawn mowers require routine maintenance. Removing and sharpening the blade after a designated period of usage will ensure your mower stays in proper condition. Following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule for John Deere mowers will help prevent costly repairs and the replacement of parts, including the blade. Removing the blade can be accomplished with a few simple tools.
Things You'll Need
Wooden block
Extension pipe
1/2-inch drive ratchet
15/16-inch socket
Place the mower on a solid, even surface. Make sure the mower is in the park position; place blocks behind the rear wheels for added safety. Raise the mower deck to the top or most upright position to gain access to the underside of the mower deck.
Use a wooden block or a large wrench to keep the blade from spinning. A 15/16-inch socket and a 1/2-inch drive ratchet are needed to remove the bolt that holds the blade in place. An extension pipe may be need for extra leverage.
Remove the bolt and washer and drop the blade from the mower deck. The blade can now be inspected, sharpened or replaced.
Tips & Warnings
Removing the deck from the mower may be necessary. Refer to the owner's manual for instructions.
