Hyacinths are fragrant flowers grown from bulbs in the spring, similar to tulips. Healthy hyacinth bulbs are meaty and not too dry. Hyacinth bulbs need to be planted in the fall before the ground freezes but after temperatures have fallen off summer highs. Hyacinth bulbs must be planted fairly deeply underground, so planting them can take a little bit more effort than bulbs and plants that require shallower holes.
Things You'll Need
Trowel
Hyacinths bulbs
Hose
Yardstick
Wait until fall temperatures reach about 40 to 50 degrees, when ground freezing is likely within a couple of weeks.
Use a trowel to dig holes that are 7 to 8 inches deep and 6 inches apart. Leave the excess dirt next to each hole. Check the depth of your holes with a yardstick if your trowel does not have a measurement scale on the blade.
Carefully place a single bulb into each hole and make sure that the tip of the bulb is pointing upward. Since the holes are fairly deep, it helps to have slender hands in case the bulbs rotate as you put them in. If the bulbs rotate and you cannot reach them, use the end of your yardstick to gently turn the bulb so that the tip points up.
Use your hands to fill in each hole, with the dirt piles from Step 1. Tamp it down lightly with your hand or trowel.
Use a hose to water the entire bed thoroughly.
Tips & Warnings
Use a wheelbarrow and shovel to dig out an entire bed to 7 or 8 inches in depth, plant all the bulbs and then cover them all up. This method takes much more strength, but it can help with spacing bulbs well and planting larger beds.
Hyacinth bulbs can be planted under short, non-woody ground cover plants.
