Fairy gardens are a style of garden created to attract birds, butterflies and occasionally traveling fairies. While fairy gardens are commonly created outdoors in beds and full gardens, terrarium gardens are an excellent alternative for those with little or no actual planting space. For best results, place the terrarium in a warm, sunny place to aid the plants in their growth and development.
Things You'll Need
Tape measure
Graphing paper
Determine the overall size and space available for your desired terrarium. If a terrarium has already been purchased, then use a tape measure to determine the overall area inside.
Draw a diagram of the terrarium on a piece of graphing paper. Use your measurements to ensure the diagram is correctly scaled.
Determine the types of plants for the garden. According to legends, fairies are fond of the same plants as butterflies, so suitable plants include those with colorful blossoms and ample nectar. For smaller terrariums, consider herbs like thyme and lavender and smaller ground cover flowering plants like alyssum to ensure the flowers have enough room to grow and thrive. Plants can either be placed directly into soil or in small planting pots inside the terrarium.
Determine the overall layout of the garden, including walkways, structures and plants. Draw the location of each item to scale on the diagram. The diagram is now a design plan for your fairy garden.
