Chinese Maple trees are a beautiful addition to any landscaping. They are often confused with the Japanese maple so make sure you know what you are purchasing when you select your tree. The scientific name is Acer discolor and this will prevent any confusion. The Chinese Maple bears glossy green leaves in the mid-spring. It will thrill you with its bright red foliage in the autumn months. Caring for a Chinese Maple is easy with basic knowledge of what types of soil and spacing this tree prefers.
Select an area that is large enough to accommodate your tree as Chinese Maples can grow to be 30 or 40 feet tall. According to the gardeningcentral.org website, this tree does best in zones 7 through 9. Space this tree at least 30 feet from other trees to enable it to thrive and get the proper nutrients. Pick an area to plant this tree with full sun to get the most colorful autumn leaves, but this tree thrives in partial shade as well.
Test your soil to be sure that it has the proper pH balance for the Chinese Maple. This tree prefers soil that is mildly acidic or with a mild alkaline content but is not happy with soils that have too much of either. Using organic mulch will help the tree to thrive if you have light soil. Avoid spreading the mulch near the base of the tree.
Provide enough water for the tree to thrive well but avoid overwatering this beautiful tree. Monitor rainfall and water well particularly during the hot summer months or periods of drought.
Prune this tree while it is dormant during the winter months. Careful pruning during its first few years will make it almost maintenance-free when it matures.
