Instructions on how to string a weed-trimmer are easy enough that anyone can do it, even with little to no mechanical ability. Once you learn the process, you will be able to string any weed-trimmer. Stringing a weed-trimmer should take no more than about 10 minutes to complete, but may take longer until you are accustomed to replacing string.
Things You'll Need
Weed-trimmer
Nylon weed-trimmer string
Screwdriver or crescent wrench (depending on model)
Turn Off and Remove String
Make sure the weed-trimmer is turned off, whether it is gas or electric. f it has a safety switch, make sure it is engaged. Unplug if electric.
Remove the trimmer head on the bottom on the weed-trimmer. It looks like a cup on the bottom of the machine. It is either removed by crescent wrench (if a bolt), a screwdriver (if a screw), or pushes up and twists off if neither bolt or screw are not present.
Remove old trimmer line by either cutting or untying the old line. Make sure it is totally removed and the trimmer line holes are cleared. It may be a good idea at this time to clean the underneath of the trimmer of debris and spray lubricant on rotator.
Replacing String
Go to a lawn and garden shop to buy replacement string.. Refer to your specific weed-trimmer manual to see which string is appropriate for your machine. It is measured in pounds, one pound being common. For lighter work, a half-pound string may be more ideal. Also, the gauge of string is important. There are different sizes depending on what type of work and what size holes are on your machine.
Clip one end of the string along the center bottom of the weed-trimmer. Attach one end of the string and wind it around the round portion of the weed-trimmer which attaches the string trimmer head. Leave enough string out to cut with. Some models have two holes for two strings to be able to cut.
Replace and close the trimmer head, turn on weed-trimmer so blade on the side of the weed-trimmer can trim off excess string.
Tips & Warnings
You may want to use gloves while replacing string. Also, seek help of garden professionals and bring model number and brand of your weed-whacker when you buy string.
