The firecracker plant, or cigar plant, has fiery red or orange tube-shaped flowers and smooth, dark green foliage. Native to Mexico and the West Indies, this plant is best grown indoors unless you live in a tropical or very warm climate. In such climates, the firecracker plant makes a good garden border or ground cover in sunny areas. Indoors, the firecracker plant's vibrant color adds spice to your decor. This plant must be replanted each year, but is easy to care for during its growing season.
Things You'll Need
Firecracker seedlings
Terra-cotta pots
Fertilizer
Trowel
Potting soil
Water
Watering can
Fill each pot about three-fourths of the way with potting soil. Remove a seedling from its tray and loosen the roots with your fingers. Place the seedling in the center of the pot.
Cover the roots with soil and press down lightly. Water the seedling deeply and drive a small, flower-pot fertilizer spike into the soil. Fertilizer spikes time-release fertilizer for even feeding.
Place the firecracker seedlings in an area with full sun. In the summer, place the pots outdoors. In the cooler months, place the pots near a large window in a warm room.
Water the seedling a little each day. Since they grow in tropical areas, they are used to lots of moisture. Change the fertilizer spike every month to ensure good nutrition.
