Whether you received a potted cypress tabletop Christmas tree or are adding a Hinoki cypress to your container garden, routine care will help the plant thrive. Move the plant to a larger container as it grows, feed it with the appropriate fertilizer and prune regularly. Give your cypress tree a water shower now and again to keep its branches bright and attractive.
Things You'll Need
Garden container
Pebbles
Potting soil
Fertilizer
Garden pruners
Spray nozzle
Remove wrapping, lights, price tags, stickers and any other non-organic materials from the cypress tree and its container, and place the plant in a cool, light location, such as an enclosed patio or porch.
Water the potted cypress tree when the top 1 inch of soil is dry to the touch. Add water until it begins to drip from the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot.
Transplant the cypress tree into a larger pot in early spring with a decorative container that is at least 2 inches larger than the current pot. Fill the bottom 2 inches with pebbles to facilitate drainage. Potting soil blended with slow-release, 10-8-6 fertilizer, mixed according to the measurements on the manufacturer's label, is a good choice.
Prune cypress trees 1 to 3 inches off the tips of each branch with sharp garden pruners in the spring to encourage new growth.
Wash the tree with a spray nozzle attached to a garden hose, setting the nozzle to a strong spray, and rinse all the branches. Spray the tree in the early morning so that it has sufficient time to dry before nightfall, or before moving it back indoors.
