Grow grass in a box by properly sowing the grass seeds in an adequate container with clean top soil and by providing favorable environmental conditions for the growth of grass. Grass is a generic term representing hundreds of individual smaller plant species. However, all grass requires nutrient-rich, moist, high pH (alkaline) soils and direct sunlight.
Things You'll Need
Box or container
Potting soil
Peat moss
Lawn lime
Water
Grass seeds
Small potting shovel
Select a box or planting container. The container's dimensions can vary with individual needs; however, the depth of the container should be at least 3 inches to provide adequate room for the grass roots to mature.
Find a location for the box that will provide direct sunlight.
Place potting soil in the container using a small gardening shovel. Leave the potting soil 1 inch from the top of the container's rim.
Over-seed the surface of the potting soil with grass seed. Apply the seeds evenly by distributing them by hand or with a small potting shovel.
Add a quarter to half inch of peat moss on top of the grass seed. Peat moss adds vital nutrients and provides moisture retention to the top soil.
Spread a 1/8-inch layer of lawn lime over the peat moss. Over time, lime increases the soil's pH, providing favorable conditions for the growth of grass.
Water the grass seeds once a day for the first two weeks or until the grass is visible through the peat moss. Continue to water the grass weekly to maintain moist soil conditions.
