Those cold winter days and nights can wreak havoc on your garden. When frost sets in, it can damage your plants beyond repair and ruin your flowers and crops. Winter is a harsh time for outdoor plants, and it can wreck your garden if you don't take the right precautions. Before those cold winter months set in, prepare your garden for the upcoming season. Prevention is the best method to help your plants survive winter.

Keep the soil around the plants moist. Moist soil retains more heat than dry soil.
Mulch your plant. Add several layers of mulch, straw or wood chips around your plant to provide insulation and help protect against the cold. Adding mulch protects the root system and aids in draining so it is less likely the soil will freeze over.
Cover your plants to help protect against cold, frost and wind. Use an old blanket, dropcloth or sheet to provide shelter for your plants -- anything to help give your plants a little extra protection from the cold winter months.
Buy black plastic. Black plastic attracts sunlight. Adding black plastic around your plants will help keep the soil a few degrees warmer and fight off frost.
Wrap your trees. If you have trees in your garden, wrap the trunks with gardening plastic to help keep heat in. Add stakes to younger trees to support them from the harsh winter winds.
