Birds are important creatures in any ecosystem, but sometimes they build their nests in places that pose a threat either to humans or the birds themselves. In cases where birds build a nest in your attic, chimney, porch, vent or a similar place, you should consider removing the nest. The problem is that bird nests are breeding grounds not only for cute baby birds, but also for harmful ticks, mites, fleas and a whole host of bacteria. Histoplasmosis is an incurable disease that can result from contact with bird feces. Fortunately there are a number of ways to get rid of unwanted bird nests and prevent birds from returning to that spot.

Step 1
Inspect the bird nest by climbing up to it using a ladder, if necessary. Make sure the nest is empty and does not contain any eggs. Removing or disrupting a nest containing bird eggs or baby birds is inhumane and illegal in most states. Do not remove the nest if an adult bird is resting inside because you might injure yourself or the bird. If the nest is empty, you can proceed with caution.
Step 2
Use an over-the-counter pesticide to decontaminate the nest and eliminate bacteria, mites and other pests. Wear protective gloves and a respiratory mask to avoid inhaling or touching harmful bacteria in the nest. Wait a few minutes and remove the nest.
Step 3
Hire a professional pest control expert if you are unable to remove the nest yourself. He can remove the nest safely and humanely, leaving both you and the birds out of harm’s way.
Step 4
Place a cat or owl statue near the site of the nest to drive away birds. If the bird feels threatened by one of its natural predators, such as cats or owls, it will most likely not build its nest there.
Step 5
Use your pets (cats and dogs) to scare birds away. Both cats and dogs like chasing and sometimes eating birds, and their noises and scent are enough to scare any bird away.
