Creeping Charlie, while a pretty shade of purple, can wreak havoc on your lawn and landscaping. As a ground ivy, creeping Charlie coils up around your plants and restricts the amount of nutrients that are taken in. The creeping Charlie's roots then take the nutrients itself, allowing it to multiply and take over your property. Although it's notorious for being hard to kill, using vinegar to kill the creeping Charlie is very effective.
Things You'll Need
Vinegar
Spray bottle
Plastic sheet/tarp
Fill your spray bottle with white vinegar. Vinegar will completely kill whatever it touches in the plant world. It travels straight to the root and restricts oxygen and water intake.
Section off the creeping Charlie weeds from the rest of your landscaping by using a sheet of plastic or a tarp to cover them.
Apply the vinegar to the creeping Charlie, making sure to only spray the weeds. If you hit other plants, immediately wash them off with your watering hose. If removed quickly, vinegar will have little effect on plants.
Wait a few days as the vinegar travels through the creeping Charlie stem and into the root system where it attacks with devastating effectiveness. The entire weed will turn brown very quickly, and you can pick it from the ground.
Tips & Warnings
Spraying a solution of borax is another home remedy -- the Iowa State University reference below offers the recipe -- though neither white vinegar nor borax are registered herbicides, so user beware.
