Build an environment in which to grow your plants. You will need an indoor area that allows you to keep the optimal temperature for vegetables. For example, you can choose to build a greenhouse outdoors or you can insulate an area of your basement and use grow lights, creating a small growing space.
Look for seeds that are for greenhouse use. When choosing your vegetable seeds, choose only seeds that will grow indoors. The seed pack should clearly state this. Other seeds may not grow as well. You can choose from many types of vegetables--beans, tomatoes and cucumbers, for example.
Monitor the climate in your grow room to maintain the ideal growing temperature. Using the seed packet instructions, set the thermostat in your growing environment to the optimal temperature.
Set up grow lights, if necessary. In a greenhouse, you may be able to use the light from the sun to grow your vegetables. In other spaces, you may need artificial light.
Start the vegetable seeds in small pots. To be sure that the seeds sprout, you want to start them in a small container, such as an egg carton.
Transfer starter plants to a more permanent location. Be sure that you give plants enough space to grow. Check each type of vegetable to see how big the plant will grow and to plan for space.
Care for your plants as you would in an outdoor garden. Your plants will need regular watering and you will also want to check for pests.
Tips & Warnings
When choosing and starting plants, keep in mind the approximate time for harvest. If you want to have fresh vegetables year round, you should start a few plants every month. This ensures that you'll always have some plants that are ready for harvest. Otherwise, you can plan to have a large harvest every few months.
Keep growing your vegetables indoors during the summer as well. You can prevent them from being exposed to too much heat or scorching from the sun. This may mean including both a heating and an air conditioning system.
