The Grancy Graybeard tree, also called a Fringe tree, is a small bush or large tree that has dark green foliage in the summer and white fringe-like flowers that bloom in late spring. The plant is native to North America and grows in USDA Zones 3 through 9, which is almost all of the United States. Although it is adapted to many climates, the Fringe tree is particular about the kind of soil in which it is planted. Knowing how to root the tree correctly will help you grow a strong and healthy tree.
Things You'll Need
Spade
Organic compost
Water
Acidic fertilizer
Choose an area to plant the Fringe tree. The tree grows best in partial sun with some afternoon shade, although it can also grow in full sun. It thrives on moist, well-drained naturally acidic soils and will even tolerate wet soils.
Amend the soil in an area four times the width of the root ball with peat or organic compost. This will feed the roots and allow them to spread out. Dig a hole over this area with a depth about the height of the root ball.
Place the Grancy Graybeard into the hole, lining up the top of the root ball with ground level. Straighten the tree and begin to fill the soil back into the hole around the tree’s roots. Fill only 2 to 3 inches and then water the soil so it can settle properly around the roots. Fill the rest of the soil in and give the tree a deep watering, extending to where the edge of the roots are located.
Water the tree daily, never allowing it to dry. Moisten, but do not soak the soil, as standing water may lead to root rot. As the tree takes root and begins to grow on its own you may decrease the amount of watering gradually.
Fertilize the Fringe tree with an acidic fertilizer in spring before any new growth appears. Follow the directions on the package for safety and application instructions.
