Birds love strawberries (Fragaria spp.) and can quickly strip your plants. Safeguard the plants when the strawberries begin to swell by covering them with protective netting to prevent the birds from getting to the fruit. You can purchase protective netting, often called bird netting, at most garden stores or online. Depending on the cultivar, strawberries are perennial in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 9.
Things You'll Need
PVC pipes or garden stakes
Protective netting, 3/4-inch mesh
Twine or twist ties
Rocks
Planter pots
Step 1
Insert four PVC pipes or garden stakes in the ground around each strawberry plant; the pipes or stakes should be taller than the plant. If your plants are set in rows or mass planted, you may be able to use fewer supports per plant. The goal is to keep the netting above the plants so that they don't become entangled.
Step 2
Drape the protective netting over the strawberry plants, ensuring that it's propped up and away from the plants by the supports. Fasten the netting to the supports using twine or twist ties.
Step 3
Secure the netting around the strawberry plants by staking it to the ground every 6 inches. Alternatively, place rocks at the edges of the netting to weigh it down where it meets the ground.
Step 4
Cap your garden stakes or PVC pipes with small planter pots to keep the mesh from catching on the supports when you shift it.
