Chinese bamboo plants have long been considered to be lucky in the home environment--often utilized in Feng Shui as a representation of both wood and water elements. Many people will adorn the bamboo plant with a red ribbon to further represent fire and make the room flow naturally. Certain numbers of stalks represent various aspects of a well-rounded and happy life. Low maintenance and easy-to-care for once established, grow bamboo in gravel with no garden soil.
Things You'll Need
Purified water
Aquarium plant food
Water the Chinese bamboo plant using filtered or purified water if your home drinking water contains chlorine, fluoride or other chemicals. Bamboo will not flourish if subjected to any chlorine or fluoride in the water.
Allow water to flow freely through the plant to help rinse out any accumulation of algae or mold from the rocks. Drain water in the tray weekly and replace with fresh water.
Apply one to two drops of aquarium plant food to the bamboo plant once per year in the summer. Never apply more fertilizer or the plant could be damaged.
Place the bamboo in filtered sun. Position the plant in the interior of the room so it receives a small amount of indirect sunlight.
Cut the top of any bamboo that has grown too long. Cut straight across and remove the top portion, which you can then place in gravel and water to start a new bamboo plant.
Maintain the household temperature between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold temperatures can kill the Chinese bamboo plant.
