Lawn Boy mowers are for the homeowner who wants a good tool to take care of his yard on a budget. With their characteristic green mower decks, Lawn Boy mowers are hard to miss. They are made by the same people who make Toro mowers. But even though Lawn Boy mowers are well made, they will still experience problems. It is good for a homeowner to know how to repair his Lawn Boy mower himself. Engine starting problems are the most common mower problems a homeowner will experience.
Things You'll Need
New spark plug
Ratcheting wrench and spark plug socket or a spark plug wrench
Gapping tool
New air filter
Fresh fuel
Fuel stabilizer
Disconnect the spark plug wire, and move it out of the way. Remove the spark plug with a ratcheting wrench and a spark plug socket or a spark plug tool. Inspect the business end of the spark plug looking for signs of wear and tear or obvious signs of damage. If the spark plug shows signs of wear, replace it immediately. Use a gapping tool to be sure the spark plug gap measures 0.030 inches before installing a new spark plug or the old spark plug that is still in good condition. Reattach the spark plug wire and attempt to start the engine. If the engine does not start, look at the condition of the air filter.
Take the air filter cover off the engine. Remove the air filter from the filter housing and inspect it for damage or wear. Reinstall clean air filters that are in good condition.
Drain the fuel out of the fuel tank, and replace it with fresh, stabilized fuel. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine does not start, the problem may be out of your hands.
Call your local service dealer for an appointment to have them look at your Lawn Boy mower. They are trained to service your Lawn Boy mower and diagnose problems that require a learned and experienced eye.
Tips & Warnings
A worn or damaged spark plug will not allow the engine to start very easily or at all.
Clogged air filters reduce the air flow into the engine which basically suffocates the engine making it difficult to start. On the other hand, if the air filter has holes in it, dirt, dust and debris can enter the combustion chamber easily and potentially cause catastrophic damage. Replace air filters at least every two seasons.
Regular unleaded gasoline will only stay fresh for up to 30 days without fuel stabilizer being added to the tank. Stabilized fuel will remain fresh for up to 12 months.
