How to Change Oil on a Ford Tractor

Tractors are often operated in harsh environments for long periods. Regularly replacing the engine oil in your Ford tractor is important in order for the engine to have a long life. Although changing the oil can be a messy job, it is a task that should not be overlooked. Proper preparation, like using latex gloves, can help reduce the mess and make changing the oil on your Ford tractor a quicker and cleaner job.

6-quarts tractor motor oil

Oil filter and cap gasket

Large adjustable wrench

Large drain pan

Latex gloves

Shop rags

Start the engine and operate the tractor for 15 to 30 minutes. Ensure the engine has achieved normal operating temperature. Park the tractor; set the brake and chock the wheels.

Place a drain pan under the oil drain plug. Make sure the pan will hold 6 quarts of oil. Put on latex gloves if desired and have a shop rag handy.

Use the adjustable wrench and remove the oil pan drain plug. The oil will be hot and will drain rapidly so be prepared. Let the oil drain while the oil filter is changed.

Change the oil filter by using the adjustable wrench to remove the oil filter canister cap. Remove the oil filter canister drain plug with the adjustable wrench and let the oil drain into the drain pan.

Reinstall the oil filter drain plug. Remove the old oil filter and install the new oil filter. Remove the old oil filter cap gasket and after installing a new one, replace the cap and tighten.

Clean the wire mesh screen on the oil pan drain plug and reinstall. Remove the filler cap and add 6 quarts of oil. Reinstall the filler cap. Start the engine and check for normal oil pressure and operation.

Dispose of the oil at a recycling center.
