Rubber trees are vigorous houseplants that don't require a lot of maintenance. However, cleaning the rubber tree's leaves every other week will keep the huge leaves free of dust and grime that prevents the leaves from absorbing sunlight. In addition to regular cleaning, an occasional dose of extra tender loving care will give the rubber tree plant's leaves an extra shine. Be sure the rubber tree's leaves are clean before you polish them.
Things You'll Need
Soft clothes or sponges
Whole milk
Water
Dip two soft cotton cloths or soft sponges in lukewarm water. Squeeze out the excess water.
Hold a cloth or sponge in each hand and wipe the top and bottom of the rubber tree plant, starting at the base of the leaf and wiping outward to the leaf tip. Allow the rubber tree leaves to air dry.
Mix 1/2 cup of whole milk with 1/2 cup of lukewarm water. Dip a sponge or soft cloth in the milk mixture and carefully wipe only the top surfaces of the leaves. Be sure to use whole milk because it's the fat in the milk that will give the leaves a high polish. Allow the rubber tree plant to air dry.
Tips & Warnings
It isn't necessary or healthy to polish the rubber tree's leaves every time you clean them. Excessive polish of any type isn't beneficial for the plant, and even healthy, organic ingredients can clog the pores.
Avoid commercial shine products, which can clog the plant's pores. When polishing the rubber tree plant, limit the polish to the top of the leaves.
