Reel mowers, like gas mowers, can be adjusted to cut the grass at different heights. Setting to a higher level will leave grass longer, which is preferred during the hottest months since longer grass requires less watering. The lowest settings are best to use early in the mowing season and for the last cutting in the fall. Scotts Reel Mowers can easily be adjusted in two ways to get the best results. You can adjust the cutting height at the wheels and the blade position to ensure even cutting.
Adjusting the Cutting Height
Locate the adjustment levers on each rear wheel.
Squeeze the lever to release it, and move it to the preferred height.
Release the lever, and let it snap into place at the appropriate notch.
Follow these same steps on the other wheel, making sure both are set at the same level.
Adjusting the Blades
Locate the two screws near the cutting blades on each side of the mower.
Adjust the front screw on each side to move the cutter bar away from the blade (if it's scraping the bar).
Adjust the rear screw on each side to move the cutter bar closer to the blade (if it's not cutting evenly or cleanly).
Tips & Warnings
Unless you are having problems, do not adjust the blades during the first year. The blades are pre-adjusted at the factory and should not need attention for 1 to 2 years after purchase. When adjusting, be sure to loosen and tighten each side evenly. Blades should only require minimal adjustment to improve cutting (1/16 inch turns at a time).
To keep your mower working at its best, thoroughly rinse the blades after each use and, when dry, spray lightly with a commercial lubricant.
