While termites are a helpful link in the wild, such as breaking down debris in a forest, they are a worry to homeowners. Once you see them in your yard, it is only a matter of time before they find your house. There are many pesticides available for termite extermination, and you may still need to call an exterminator if the infestation is extensive. There are, however, some organic methods for killing and controlling them before they invade your space.
Things You'll Need
Boiling water
Boric acid
Bleach
Bring a pan of water to boiling on the stove, and boil for several minutes. Using potholders, carefully carry the pan outside and dump the boiling water on the termite-infested area, whether it is a mound, mulch or around the perimeter of the house. Repeat as necessary until it appears all insects are dead.
Encourage natural predators such as ants, flies and spiders. If you live a Southwestern state, invite anteaters. Other bug-eating helpers are farm animals such as ducks and geese.
Pour undiluted bleach onto the area infested by termites, and around the perimeter of the house. Bleach will kill termites on contact, and several applications can discourage them from attempting to move toward buildings and other areas you are barricading.
Pour boric acid onto termites and any area infested by them. It comes in liquid, granules, powder, dust or pellets, and will kill and repel the insects. Adding it to bait stations planted in the ground around the perimeter of your house or throughout your yard will provide additional protection.
Avoid creating a haven for termites, which are attracted to moisture and wood. Keep mulch beds, trees and vegetation away from the house. Do not leave water sitting in the yard or basement, and keep cracks in the foundation or slab repaired.
Tips & Warnings
If your house is infested, it is probably time to call a professional. Check with a termite specialist, however, to see if they can use more natural methods of pesticide.
