Whether you have pets or not, you may experience a flea problem at some point either inside or outside your home. When this happens, you have several options on how to treat the problem. The first option is to call an exterminator, which can be expensive and usually means toxic chemicals will be sprayed around your home. The second option is to buy commercial home treatments, which also involve a lot of chemicals. The third option is to make your own natural remedies, which allow you control the substances used in your home.
Things You'll Need
Baking dish
Water
Dish detergent
Lamp
Fleabane
Diatomaceous earth
Natural borax
Storage container
Table salt
Rubber gloves
Breathing mask
Vacuum
Method One: Soap and Water
Fill a shallow baking dish with water. Add a tbsp, of dish detergent to the water and mix it together.
Place the baking dish on the ground in the center of a carpeted room.
Place a lamp over top of the baking dish and turn out all other lights.
Leave the dish overnight. The fleas will jump to get closer to the light and fall into the water. The soap breaks the water tension, drowning the fleas.
Dump the water down the toilet in the morning and repeat as necessary.
Method Two: Plants
Purchase a variety of fleabane from your local nursery. There are several varieties, all of which are part of the Aster family.
Choose a location for your fleabane. For better blooming, fleabane should be planted where they get partial shade during the hottest part of the day.
Plant your fleabane in your chosen location and water your plant regularly.
Divide your fleabane into separate plants in the spring. Plant the separate plants as you did in step 4. The fleabane is known to discourage fleas from visiting your yard and hopefully keep them off your pets.
Method Three: Diatomaceous Earth
Mix a pound and a half each of diatomaceous earth and natural borax in a large storage container. Use the diatomaceous earth and borax you can purchase at your local garden supply store, not the ones you can buy at the pool supply stores.
Add one cup of table salt to the mixture.
Wear rubber gloves and a breathing mask. Use your hands to mix the products together. Although all the products are natural and safe, wearing a mask and gloves is a safety precaution.
Sprinkle your mixture all over your home and leave it for two to three days.
Vacuum up the mixture. The diatomaceous earth will suffocate the fleas and the borax and salt dehydrate them.
Tips & Warnings
A simple step is to vacuum your home regularly, whether or not you see fleas. This will keep the flea population under control. Dispose of the contents of your vacuum in a sealed bag and place the bag outside.
Also wash all rugs and mats in hot water and dry them in the dryer to kill the fleas.
It can take several attempts to completely get rid of fleas. You may have to repeat a treatment several times or use several of them together.
Diatomaceous earth and borax are natural and safe; however, prolonged inhalation can irritate you or your pets. If you have the ability to leave your home for a few days and stay with family or in a hotel, it is a good idea.
