Dwarf mondo grass is not actually grass, but part of the lily family. It is a low-growing ground cover about 4 inches high with little white or lilac-tinged flowers that bloom from July to September. The plant is hardy down to USDA zone 6, where the temperature does not drop below -10 degrees F. You can propagate this plant most effectively through division.
Things You'll Need
Spade
Water
Find a densely populated area of dwarf mondo grass to divide in the spring. Dig a clump out of the ground with a spade, being careful not to tear the roots.
Tease apart the roots of the large clump into smaller clumps of dwarf mondo grass. Include as many roots as possible and eight to ten leaves on each smaller clump. This process, in addition to propagating the plants, will help older plants breathe more easily.
Plant the dwarf mondo grass in the ground wherever you want it to grow. Tamp down the soil around the base of the plants to support the roots in the ground.
Water the dwarf mondo grass, keeping it consistently moist until it starts to grow in its new home. Continue watering regularly through the growing season, allowing it to dry between waterings. In subsequent seasons, the dwarf mondo grass requires little to no water as it is a drought-tolerant plant.
