Its rare to actually see the mole crickets in your yard. This is because they are underground most of the time and are nocturnal. They are visible during spring and fall, when the mole crickets fly and mate. Mole crickets can cause some damage. They are omnivores, so they will eat your garden. They build underground tunnels that can cause your grass to die and raise the earth. Their tunnels can be as long as 20 feet in length.
Maintain a healthy lawn. Do not cut your grass too short and keep your lawn mower blades sharp. This will help do as little damage to the grass as possible. Do not over-water your lawn.
Remove anything that might weaken the grass or its root system and attract mole crickets.
Introduce the mole crickets' natural predators, the larra wasp and the sphecid wasp. Both types of wasps lay their eggs on the mole crickets. The larval in turn eat the crickets. Each of the three generations of wasps per year can kill up to 25 percent of the mole crickets plaguing your yard.
Encourage the wasps to enter your yard by planting shrubbery such as false buttonwood and partridge pea wildflowers.

Both the larra and the sphecid wasp typically do not sting humans and are not as aggressive as adults.
