When your Briggs & Stratton engine won't start on a small machine such as a mower or generator but there is plenty of gas, a clean air filter and a good spark plug, then you will most likely need to clean the carburetor. The carburetor can become gummed up with old gas and clog the carburetor, preventing gas from entering the engine. You can clean a Briggs carburetor with a few supplies.
Things You'll Need
Flathead screwdriver
Bucket
Carb cleaner spray
Wrench set
Follow the fuel hose on the base of the gas tank on the Briggs & Stratton engine to the side of the carburetor.
Unscrew the clamp holding the hose to the side of the carburetor with the flathead screwdriver. Pull the hose off and direct it into the bucket and let any gas pour into it.
Spray carb cleaner into the side hole of the carburetor for a few seconds. Clamp the fuel hose back to the side of the carburetor.
Remove the bolt from the base of the carburetor with the proper wrench. Pull the fuel bowl off the base of the carburetor and dump the gummy gas in it into the bucket.
Spray carb cleaner into the fuel bowl. Spray carb cleaner onto the float above the fuel bowl. Spray carb cleaner above the float and onto the carburetor valve. Bolt the fuel bowl back to the base of the carburetor.
