Riding-mower racing is becoming a popular pastime and hobby. Souping up your riding lawn mower takes only a few procedures and tools. The engine on riding lawn mowers has a governor next to the flywheel that restricts the engine's speed. Racing mowers also need good air intake to burn fuel faster. Racing riding mowers can be fun, and a few steps can give your mower the edge.
Things You'll Need
Socket wrench
Socket set
Air filter
92 octane gas
Remove the flywheel cover from the top of the riding lawn mower engine. Unscrew all the bolts around the perimeter of the cover with the proper sized sockets and pull the cover off.
Find the governor bolted next to the flywheel. Remove the bolt holding the governor to the engine block with the proper sized socket. Unhook the springs from the end of the governor hooking to the eyelets on the carburetor and throttle linkage.
Replace the flywheel cover and bolt it back down.
Unscrew the plastic nut holding the air filter cover on the top of the engine with your hand. Pull the air filter out and replace it with a new one. Tighten the air filter cover back on.
Inspect the muffler for a proper seal against the exhaust port. Tighten the muffler down with the proper sized wrenches if it is loose. The muffler provides back pressure to the riding mower engine and therefore increases the horsepower.
Fill the gas tank with 92 octane gas. This gas burns quicker and will make the mower go faster.
