Things You'll Need
YOU DO NOT NEED ALL OF THESE JUST DEPENDS ON THE METHOD YOU CHOOSE.
Ax
potassium nitrate
soil
stump grinder
AX AND SHOVEL - The first way and most labor intensive to remove a tree stump is with a good ol' ax and shovel. Dig around the stump until the roots are exposed. The stump is held in the ground by the roots. Take the ax and hack away at the roots and dig out the stump. Works great for smaller stumps not so much for big stumps.
STUMP GRINDER - The use of a stump grinder is only for the mechanically inclined. This machine basically grinds the stump, hence the name down to the ground and than you can cover it with dirt and nature will take its course.
CUT AND FILL WITH SOIL - The longest method but the easiest is to make several cuts in the stump with an ax. Make sure to penetrate a couple of inches to get to the fresh juicy wood. Now cover the stump with fresh soil. The micro organisms in the soil will slowly eat away at the wood and in a few months it should be nice and rotted. This acts like a compost pile. You can eventually take a shovel and simply dig the stump out.
POTASSIUM NITRATE (Salt Petre) - This chemical is sold at many hardware stores. Drill or cut several inches into the stump and pour the Potassium Nitrate into the hole. This should dry out the stump and will be easier to hack away at with an ax. The problem with this stuff besides the fact that it is toxic is that the containers also recomend burning the stump. This is obviously a problem for many reasons, including laws that would prohibit such activity. Check with your local law department if you are unsure.
