Whether you are planning a landscaping project or buying a home, one of the most crucial pieces of information that you will need is square footage. Square footage is a measurement of area--that is, the amount of space contained within certain perimeters. By performing some simple measurements and math, you can figure the square feet contained in a particular space.
Things You'll Need
Tape measure
Graph paper
Pencil
Ruler
Calculator
String
Use a tape measure to measure the length and width of the area. If the area isn't rectangular or square, measure all the dimensions. If some of the lines are curved, you can place a string on the curved boundary line and then measure the string.
Make a sketch of the area based on your measurements. Set a certain scale for the sketch to make sure that it is accurate. For example, you might set an inch as equal to a foot.
Divide the drawing into shapes. The easiest shapes to calculate are rectangles and squares, but you may need to include triangles and circles as well.
Determine the area of each shape by carrying out the appropriate formula:
Rectangles and squares = length x width
Triangles = (base x height) / 2
Circles = (radius^2) x 3.14; That is, measure from the center of the circle to a point on the perimeter and multiply that figure times itself. Then multiply your answer times pi (3.14).
Add the areas of all the shapes to find the total square feet.
