How to Service, Adjust & Clean Toro Super 700 Sprinkler Heads

The Toro Co. produces several lines of lawn sprinklers aimed at both professional and residential users. Toro's Super 700 series is designed for homeowners or light commercial applications and offers rotating heads with several adjustment options. To keep your Toro sprinklers operating at peak performance, take the time to clean or service each head as needed. The process can also help you adjust the system to meet your needs.

Use a 1/16-inch hex wrench to remove the set screw on each head. Set this screw aside in a safe place for reuse.

Grasp the cap of the head in one hand and the bottom in the other. Holding the bottom of the unit stationary, twist the cap to screw it off. Remove the cap and set it aside.

Lift out the nozzle and drive mechanism from inside the sprinkler base, paying careful attention to how they fit together.

Remove the mesh basket from inside the sprinkler head base. Spray it with water from your hose to remove any dirt or debris.

Rinse the nozzle and drive mechanism with water to remove any dirt or debris. Wipe these items clean with a rag before proceeding.

Turn on the sprinkler system to flush water through the heads while they are disassembled. This forces any dirt or debris out of the pipes or the base of each head.

Shut the water off and place the mesh basket back into the base. Reinstall the nozzle and drive mechanism, then screw the cap back into place. Replace the set screw to keep the cap secure.

Set the spray radius to adjust how far the water projects from each head. Look for the steam breaker screw located along the top of the cap on Toro sprinkler heads.

Use a 1/16 hex wrench to adjust the steam breaker screw as needed. Turn the screw clockwise to create a smaller spray radius, or turn it counterclockwise to increase the spray radius. A larger radius means you can water objects that are farther away, while a smaller radius will keep the water centered closer to the head.

Adjust the arc spray of each head to set how far the unit will rotate as it sprays. Turn the system on so you can make this adjustment while water is spraying.

Look for the adjustment button at the base of the head (where the pop-up portion of the nozzle meets the base). Turn the head all the way to the left very gently and hold this button in as you set the spray arc. With the button held in, rotate the nozzle clockwise to increase the arc radius or counterclockwise to decrease this radius. The larger the arc spray radius, the more the head rotates as it sprays.

Do not overtighten any screws or adjustment features on these heads, as it could cause permanent damage.

When turning the head or the nozzle to adjust it, do not apply force. Turn it by hand until you feel resistance, then stop immediately.
