Years of use and wear and tear can really take their toll on your Murray Select 20 lawn mower. A mower that won't start hampers your mowing productivity. The three keys things an engine needs to start are air, gas and a spark. You can easily service your Murray mower and get it started in no time, plus save yourself the mechanic's fees by doing a simple tune-up yourself.
Things You'll Need
Pliers
Bucket
Carb-cleaner spray
Socket-wrench and set
Foot-pound torque wrench
Spark plug
Air filter
Unleaded gas
Park your mower on a flat surface. Pull the cap off the spark plug on the front of the engine.
Locate the gas tank on the engine. Follow the hose on the underside of the tank to the side of the carburetor. Squeeze the clamp holding the hose onto the carburetor with the pliers and slide the clamp off the hose. Pull the hose off and point it into the bucket to catch the old gas.
Spray carb-cleaner into the side hole on the carburetor. Re-clamp the hose back onto the side of the carburetor.
Unscrew the bolt holding the fuel bowl onto the base of the carburetor with the pliers. Pull the fuel bowl off and dump the old gas into the bucket. Spray carb-cleaner onto the area above the fuel bowl. Tighten the fuel bowl back on.
Unscrew the bolt holding the air-filter cover onto the side of the engine with a properly sized wrench. Pull out the old air filter and replace it with a new one. Tighten the cover back on.
Unscrew the spark plug with the proper socket. Finger-tighten in the new spark plug. Fit the correct socket on the foot-pound torque wrench. Tighten the spark plug until the wrench meter reads 15 ft-lbs. Push the cap back on the spark plug.
Add unleaded fuel to your gas tank. Press the primer bulb on the front of the engine three times. Start the mower.
