Daisies are a popular flower with lots of different varieties to choose from. Some of the more popular varieties are shasta, painted and African daisies. They make a fine starting plant for beginning gardeners because they are very hardy and easily tolerate poor soil and little shade. They also require very little attention. Daisies started from seed bloom the second year they are planted.

Daisy seeds
Compost
Manure
General purpose fertilizer
High phosphorus fertilizer
Mulch
Choose a location that receives good sunlight and soil drainage. If a spot with good light can't be found, partial shade is acceptable.
Work compost and manure into the soil prior to planting the seeds. Seeds can be planted during spring, summer or fall.
Plant seeds in the ground at a depth of 1/16 of an inch. Space seeds apart approximately 18 to 24 inches.
Apply general purpose fertilizer according to package directions during the early growth stage, and monthly after that. Switch to a fertilizer high in phosphorus just before the daisies bloom. This will make the flowers bigger and brighter.
Water daisies regularly. They require an average amount of moisture. Do not let the soil become too dry between watering.
Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the flowers if you live in an area with extremely cold winters. This will help protect the daisies from the elements.
Divide and replant established daisies when they begin to grow too thickly together. They suck nutrients away from each other, which will result in poor overall health of the flower. This needs to be done at least once every three to four years.
