There are many organic treatments for the removal of grass and weeds. An organic grass and weed killer is any lawn treatment that does not use harmful chemicals or toxins in the removal of vegetation, and there is a variety of treatments, from simple lawn applicators to fertilizers. According to the experts at Weekend Gardener, soil solarization is "one of the best nonmechanical ways to get rid of weeds, and some diseases and pests."
Soil Solarization
Soil solarization is a technique for weed removal that harnesses the energy of the sun to heat soil and kill unwanted pests, fungi, grass, weeds and weed seeds in the upper levels of soil. Solarization of the soil involves covering a plot of land with a plastic tarp and leaving it for six to eight weeks. The soil under the tarp will heat, sometimes up to as much as 125 degrees F, and this heat will cleanse the soil and kill unwanted weeds while increasing the organic matter decomposition, and thus the nutrient content, in the soil.
Lawn Applicators
There are also many companies manufacturing organic lawn applicators, such as the Wow! applicators listed by GardensAlive.com, which kill weeds in lawns. These applicators are typically applied to the lawn with seed spreaders in the fall and winter months to promote healthy soil and remove weeds.
Herbicidal Soaps
There are a variety of herbicidal soaps on the market that combine organic soaps with water and various organic plant killing chemicals. These soaps are generally manufactured as concentrates that are diluted with water and sprayed directly on weeds and grasses. Most organic soap sprays allow for children and animals to play around them immediately after spraying, as the organic chemicals are not dangerous or harsh.
Barrier Mats
Another way to kill weeds and grasses organically and keep them from other plants is barrier mats. Barrier mats are plastic sheets designed to lie in flowerbeds and gardens. Typically, holes are cut to allow desired plant growth while the solid plastic sheeting elsewhere prevents weeds from sprouting and growing. Mulches and organic matter soils can be placed over the barriers to hide them from view, but this practice may encourage weed growth above the barrier.
Fertilizers
One of the best ways to ensure healthy soils and healthy plants without the need for weed and grass killers is to use organic fertilizers. These fertilizers promote soil microbial growth that in turn resists fungus and bacteria harmful to plants while encouraging the production of nitrogen and other nutrients necessary for plant health. Healthy plants are naturally resistant to weed growth and various plant infections.
